Close Protection
What Does a Close Protection Officer Do? Roles, Responsibilities and a Typical Day
The role of a close protection officer extends far beyond physical presence. Here is what a CPO actually does from pre-deployment planning to live operations and post-assignment reporting.
The Core Responsibilities of a Close Protection Officer
A close protection officer (CPO) is responsible for the physical safety and security of a designated individual known as the principal. The role combines intelligence gathering, operational planning, physical protection, and crisis management.
In the UK, all CPOs operating commercially must hold a valid SIA Close Protection licence. Reputable companies additionally require BS 7858 pre-employment screening and ongoing professional development.

Pre-Deployment: Advance Work and Threat Assessment
Before any principal movement, a CPO conducts an advance. This involves visiting venues, hotels, and transit routes ahead of the principal's arrival. The CPO assesses entry and exit points, identifies potential vulnerabilities, liaises with venue security, and establishes emergency protocols.
Simultaneously, the team prepares a threat assessment: a structured analysis of the risks facing the principal based on their profile, current activities, and the operational environment.
During the Operation: Principal Escort and Environment Management
During live operations, the CPO manages the immediate environment around the principal. This includes controlling access, monitoring for surveillance or threat indicators, managing crowds at public events, and maintaining communication with the wider security team.
The CPO positions themselves to provide maximum protection while remaining as unobtrusive as possible. Effective close protection is low-profile.
Driving and Secure Transportation
Many CPOs are also trained as security drivers or work alongside specialist security chauffeurs. Secure transportation is a critical element of close protection. The vehicle transition is one of the highest-risk moments in any principal movement.
Security drivers are trained in evasive and defensive driving techniques, route selection, anti-surveillance, and vehicle security protocols.

First Aid and Medical Response
All SIA-licensed CPOs are required to hold a first aid qualification. Reputable companies require operatives to hold an enhanced qualification such as First Person on Scene (FPOS), enabling them to manage medical emergencies until professional medical assistance arrives.
Post-Assignment: Reporting and Debrief
After each assignment, a CPO produces a written report documenting the operation, any incidents or near-misses, and recommendations for future deployments. This intelligence feeds into ongoing threat assessments and helps refine the security plan over time.
