Key findings
- • Licence holding and deployability are not the same thing; a minority of licence holders work close protection as a primary occupation.
- • Female close protection officers remain the most supply-constrained category nationally.
- • Medical, advanced driving and protective surveillance qualifications carry the largest rate premiums.
- • Regional supply outside London and the North West lengthens lead times more than it raises rates.
Licence holders versus deployable officers
A current SIA Close Protection licence establishes a legal minimum, not operational capability. Deployable officers are those with recent assignment experience, current vetting, insurance cover and a track record a provider will stand behind.
Where supply is tightest
Female operatives, officers with pre-hospital medical qualifications and officers trained in surveillance detection are the three hardest categories to fill at short notice anywhere in the UK.
What this means for buyers
Give notice where you can. Forty-eight hours turns a short-notice premium into a planned deployment with a written risk assessment behind it, and widens the pool of officers actually suited to the task.
