Close protection for public figures and executives is overwhelmingly a planning and observation discipline rather than a physical one, VIP Protection Services has said in an explainer aimed at first-time buyers.
“If an officer has to use physical skills, several earlier decisions have already gone wrong. The job is to make sure those decisions go right.” — spokesperson, VIP Protection Services
What the role actually involves
The bulk of close protection work is advance planning: route selection and alternates, venue reconnaissance, arrival and egress arrangements, liaison with venue security, medical and hospital identification, and contingency planning.
On task, the officer manages proximity, observes the environment, controls approach and, where necessary, removes the principal from a developing situation.
- • Advance reconnaissance of venues and routes
- • Arrival, holding and egress planning
- • Crowd and approach management
- • Medical readiness and hospital identification
- • Liaison with venue, event and police contacts
- • Written reporting after each task
Public figures versus executives
Public figures typically face volume exposure — crowds, fans, media and fixated individuals — where the challenge is managing approach without creating confrontation or unflattering imagery.
Executives typically face targeted exposure — activism, disputes, fixated individuals — where the challenge is low-profile continuity across a working routine.
Why discretion is the product
Visible protective posture attracts attention, invites media framing and can escalate the very behaviour it is meant to deter.
Most engagements are therefore designed to be invisible to observers, with officers in business or context-appropriate dress and unmarked vehicles.
Selecting the right officer
Fit matters as much as credentials. An officer who works well in a stadium environment is not automatically right for a family home or a boardroom.
Selection should consider environment, continuity, language, medical qualification, driving capability and personal manner alongside licensing and screening.

Frequently asked questions
What does a close protection officer actually do?
Advance planning, route and venue reconnaissance, arrival and egress management, environmental observation, approach control, medical readiness and post-task reporting.
Do close protection officers carry weapons in the UK?
No. Private close protection officers in the UK are unarmed. Protection relies on planning, observation, positioning and withdrawal.
How many officers does a public figure need?
It depends on the assessed threat and environment. Many engagements are single-officer; crowd environments and elevated threat justify teams.
Is close protection always visible?
No, and usually it should not be. Low-profile operation avoids escalating attention and preserves the principal's routine.
What qualifications should an officer hold?
A valid SIA close protection licence and BS 7858 screening as a baseline, with first aid or FREC qualification, advanced driving and relevant environment experience as strong indicators.
